Silver Lining

When a liver transplant became the only curative option for my mother’s advanced Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC), I volunteered to become her living liver donor in January 2023. However, on March 29, she passed away from multiple complications—sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome. This concept is rooted in that heartbreaking time, shaped by one lingering question: what if there had been a targeted treatment that could have cured her disease?

Peacock Hands

Medicine was the language we spoke at home. I grew up in a medical household where health advice was simply ubiquitous— “It is essential to eat 32 types of food a day,” or “Fat only burns after 23 minutes of exercising” were bite-sized content hardwired in my subconscious mind. One that I was often reminded of was to “keep a 10-inch distance between your eyes and the reading material.” I’ve often wondered—could there be a more endearing way for my dad to encourage his pediatric patients to follow healthy habits than using reprimands?

Retinoblastoma

During my time as a medical interpreter at MSKCC, I spent more than half of my hours assisting Dr. Abramson in his Retinoblastoma (RB) clinic. RB is a rare and devastating eye cancer that affects children under the age of five. Historically, treatment often required enucleation—the surgical removal of the eye. But at MSK, 95% of young patients retain both eyes with normal vision, and 99% are cured of the disease.
